Yes I also finally attended Refik Anadol’s exhibition, which was also excellent, but not explicitly mentioned in this post

This Weekend I have been thinking about excellence, or what does it mean to be truly an expert in something? Someone that others witness at their craft and think…

“Wow, they really know what they’re doing!”

I have always been something of a generalist, I know a little about a lot, and am easily bored, so frequently flit from interest to interest, never getting that deep into anything. Generally, it suits me personally and professionally, and it has some advantages in work, giving the ability to mix and match ideas and concepts from different backgrounds to create new innovative ideas. Still, the issue I hit time and again is that I often feel inadequate as a generalist. That’s quite likely a personal feeling, and may or may not be true, but it’s far easier to be impressed by someone who is a master of their craft, rather than someone who is a generalist.

It’s a thought that’s been bubbling at the back of my mind for some time, but came to the foreground over the weekend after three events.

I went to a comedy night on Friday, I don’t think it was any of the comedians first time, but they were certainly all non-professionals. Stand-up comedy is super hard. You have to elicit one reaction, and if you don’t do that, you have failed. I used to be a professional musician, and that’s different…
